About me

Gale Schlegl is a multidisciplinary artist, educator, and museum professional based in St. Louis, Missouri. Working through an autobiographical and intersectional lens, Schlegl explores modern surrealism using a range of media, including painting, sculpture, installation, illustration, and the body, to examine themes of growth, repair, and transformation.

With over a decade of experience as a professional illustrator and writer, Schlegl has illustrated seven published children’s books, including Buddy by Jacqueline Krafft, which has sold more than 15,000 copies worldwide.

In addition to his studio practice, Schlegl has more than five years of experience in arts education and administration. He has developed and taught inclusive, arts-integrated curricula for students of all ages with diverse educational needs at the Center of Creative Arts (COCA). He has also provided multimedia and creative writing instruction to teen apprentices at STL ArtWorks, as well as to undergraduate students at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

Schlegl's museum experience includes organizational, installation, and collection roles at the Contemporary Art Museum of St. Louis, the University Museum at SIUE, and the Museum of Contemporary and Religious Art. He holds an MFA in Fine Art from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and a BA in Fine Art and English from Saint Louis University, graduating magna cum laude.
